Security involves a wide spectrum of issues and must include coverage from the physical infrastructure to the systems and information assets. Companies cannot secure these diverse assets with technology-based point solutions alone. It is far better to first evaluate underlying business processes, corporate policies and human behaviours that might be putting their company at risk. Then, develop effective security programs that view security holistically, as a discipline not as a set of disparate technologies.

Organisations that take this enterprise-level view of security are more likely to understand their business tolerance for risk, having identified specific security risks and risk mitigation options. They are better equipped to shield their assets from harm and protect themselves and their interests.

IBM provides a range of physical security services in conjunction with its partners to complement the logical, people and organisational aspects of a holistic security solution.

Site Security: This service evaluates the physical security controls and procedures clients use for emergency planning, incident management, contract management and the protection of proprietary information and physical assets.

Social engineering infiltration testing can also be included. IBM analyses the data collected against the clients' corporate standards and IBM's own internal standards and best practices for site security. Clients can use the resulting security baseline to measure changes and improvements over time.

Digital Video Surveillance:
This solution enables clients to integrate digital video surveillance and security technology with their network and IT systems. The service can provide client security personnel with better image quality and command over monitored areas, plus indexed digital content and a centralised storage area network (SAN). It can also include advanced features like biometric identification to improve clients' intrusion detection and incident response capabilities.

The IBM security and privacy services team work in close partnership with IBM research labs around the world to stay current on new exposures and to develop new security technology methods. This includes biometrics, encryption technology, wireless security, collaborative data sharing, digital media technology, privacy technology and intrusion detection analysis. This partnership has resulted in innovations like the IBM Smart Surveillance System (S3), an open framework for event-based surveillance.
